"Sailors Rest Your Oars!"
The ultimate sacrifice that our forgone shipmates have given is our Freedom Today;
Lest we forget.... REMEMBER THEM!
Please spend a moment in prayer for our shipmates on eternal patrol.

While we pause a moment to reflect on those that gave everything in the service of OUR Country, please remember this is the primary reason that United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. was formed. By joining the SUBVETS we have accepted the responsibility to "perpetuate the memory". The men of our submarine heritage answered the call of our country and went in harms way to protect our ideals and our way of life. No one truly believes they are going to die when they step on board. But knowing that it may turn out that way, we still served. There must always be patriots willing to loose everything for the greater good, for that is the Price of Freedom. Some of those men who did not pay the ultimate price agreed that we should never forget those that did. SVWWII taught us many lesson in this area, by example, and we listened. We will hold their torch next to ours until no SUBVET walks this earth. Join us at our memorial services and help perpetuate the memory.
Please remember that our membership year is January to December. If you want to stay current in SUBVETS you should send in your dues now. Please do not wait until the end of the "Grace Period" (March 31) to renew unless you cannot avoid it. PW Louthain – Base Secretary

Groton Base Special License Plate, send Base Secretary a SASE requesting DMV application.by John Carcioppolo - Groton Base Commander
Happy New Year! I hope that all of you and your families had a Great Holiday. The Holidays and 2001 are behind us. We look forward to the challenges of a New Year. 2001 ended another record year for Groton Base with many accomplishments and improvements. We ended 2001 with 1719, an increase of 31 % over 2002. We're already off to a fantastic start for 2002 having 1211 members.
Last January my personal goals for Groton Base in 2001 were: (1) 1500 members; (2) Less than 7% non-renewal rate; (3) getting more members participating in Memorial Services since this is what our organization is really about; (4) increased participation in community events; (5) Increased support for the National Scholarship Fund; (6) To work more closely with our Shipmates from the Thames River Chapter of SUBVETS WWII, and bring both organizations closer together; (7) To have increased participation in Base/National Elections; and (8) expanding our Boat Sponsorship program for boats to receive this newsletter Boat Notes so that each Submarine home ported in Groton could be sponsored to receive four. Looking back on 2001 with much satisfaction, I believe that together we accomplished all of our goals except Goal (2), our Non-Renewal Rate. This is our biggest challenge, getting all previous members to renew again in the new year. Last year the percentage of members who didn't renew was about 9%, our goal was less than 7%.
So what's next? We can certainly sit back and pat ourselves on the back about what a great year 2001was. Or we can be aggressive and continue doing what we have been doing and to grow and continue to be the best base in the USSVI Organization.
As I said, our biggest challenge is getting our 2001 members to renew. Many times the members often forget or they put it off. Often, Life members forget that base dues ($10.00) are still required. Many don't renew because they relocate out of the area and we don't get an address change, so we loose touch. We want you all back in 2002, so there are several reminders in this newsletter. If your name in the address label has an * next to it and a RENEWAL NOTICE stamp, you need to renew. Those who we have email addresses for will continue to receive a special email advising them they need to renew. Also, in the Membership section, there is a listing of all non-renewals with the amount you owe. This listing isn't intended to embarrass you. It's simply another reminder that you aren't current for 2002. It also serves as a check for our records, where we "think" you didn't renew, but, because of a record keeping error we have it wrong. We hope that you'll pay enough attention to that section and correct us when we are wrong. That's all we can do. The rest is up to you.
You have until 31 March to renew before you will be dropped from the Groton Base Roster. Life members who do not renew are changed to Members at Large and still maintain National Membership. If your decision is to not renew with us at Groton Base, that's fine, I can't stop that. I can just thank you for your membership and support for Groton Base till this time. But if you're not going to renew, I'd ask for you to contact the Base Secretary PW Louthain and give him some feedback about why you didn't renew. That way, if there's a problem we didn't know about, maybe we can correct it so that others don't leave us for the same reason(s).
Finally, I have often told people our membership spans from Italy to Japan and from Norway to Mexico. Every year many of our members continue to return. Even those who live near other USSVI Bases. We have many members who have never seen our clubhouse and many dual members have joined us from other bases. We couldn't have become the best base in USSVI without a concentrated team effort. I have some fine base officers on the EBOARD, as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and as Club Manager/Permittee in Bud Atkins, PW Louthain, Dave Shoaff, Charlie Warrington, Chris Quijada and some fine committee chairmen in Jerry Connolly, Gary Coulter, Bob Sniper, Tom Connors, and Darrell Best as my assistants who help me get the job done. These guys are the best! I'd like to express my strongest personal thanks and appreciation to these guys for all they do for SUBVETS Groton Base and me. We are committed again in 2002 to keeping Groton Base as the best, to helping Groton Base grow, making improvements, and providing you with a quality organization that you and your shipmates are proud to be members of, and your families are proud to be associated with.
In closing, serving in Submarines, you served in the most Elite part of the Navy, the SILENT SERVICE. Because of our common bond being qualified in Submarines, as Shipmates Bobby Reed and Tommy Cox would say in their song, we are all Brothers of the Phin. Now you are part of a very Elite Organization, U.S. SUBVETS. We are off and running Hot, Straight and Normal into another great year. There are lots of different organizations out there but none as exclusive as SUBVETS. Our organization is the only one whose membership is exclusively Submariners, their families, and those who supported or built Submarines. It's also the only organization that exclusively perpetuates the memory of Submariners. The camaraderie and the uniqueness we share as Submariners is why you are all members of this organization and why others who earned Submarine dolphins should be members.
Straight Board - John C. - Base Commander
by Edwin "Bud" Atkins - Groton Base Vice Commander
Now is the time to get your order in for your Vests so you can have them for the 38 year convention in Groton. We now have about a two week turn around after I have sent in your order. Garrison Hats are also on sale and we have a large selection behind the Bar. We are still looking for help doing SVGB business during the noon lunches.
First we'd like to congratulate all of our Shipmates who were recently advanced to Petty Officer Third Class, Second Class, and First Class. Your hard work paid off, and you continue to move up the Navy's ladder of Success. Next I'd like to offer congratulations to the crews of USS PHILADELPHIA (SSN 690), USS PROVIDENCE (SSN 719), and USS ALEXANDRIA (SSN 757). These boats home ported here in Groton have been selected by COMSUBLANT as winners for the 2001 Battle E Awards. The Battle E represents COMSUBLANTS decision that these boats are "The Best of the Best." We know that winning the Battle E award is no easy accomplishment. It takes a lot of hard work and teamwork from the whole crew. We are very proud of your accomplishments. We would also like to congratulate all those Shipmates selected as Sailor of the Year for your respective commands and to wish all of you the very best in your future Sailor of the Year competitions.
Next we'd like to welcome several of our newest members. Welcome to John Trubee, the Base Commander for the BUFFALO Base who joined Groton Base as a dual member. Also to Sid Harrison, the USSVI Web Master, and a primary member of Lockwood Internet Base who joined us as a dual member. We also welcome Marc Churchwell, the new CSG2 Command Master Chief.
I thought I would simply list all of our accomplishments for 2001. Almost 2 pages later I realized that wasn’t a simple task. 2001 was our most successful year for SUBVETS Groton Base. We accomplished so much and grew in so many ways. The biggest thing that has grown from all of this activity is our public image. People are more aware of SUBVETS Groton Base. We have strived to change our image that SUBVETS is more than a bar and a place to get a good bowl of chili and a beer.
People see us as a brotherhood of Submariners, past, present and future. When some one hears the name SUBVETS in this area they think of two things. The first is what we stand for: history, heritage and what our creed says we are supposed to do, which is "Perpetuate the memory of our Shipmates who gave their lives in the pursuit of their duties while serving their country". That is first and foremost of the image that anyone should have about SUBVETS.
The second image that people have about us is that we are about camaraderie. We’re about that special bond of friendship between Shipmates who wear the coveted gold or silver Submarine DOLPHINS.
Although we had a very successful year, we sadly lost 14 Shipmates, called to duty with our Supreme Commander. 11 of these shipmates were HOLLAND CLUB members: Shipmates John B. Jackson, Elbert E. Wheat, Frank A. Fasolo, Bob Vera, James F. Orr Sr., Lawrence W. Malone III, Bradford T. Nelson, Arthur E. Pitka, James "Kimo" Ward, Edward W. Awezec, Andrew Feindt, Edward C. Fogarty, Nick C. Petronzio, and John J. McGuirk. rest your oars!
Although many may say Groton Base’s biggest accomplishment was our membership statistics, which was the highest ever. Our actual biggest accomplishments were the growth in participation of our Memorial Services, the awareness in the community of what SUBVETS is about, and how the SUBVETS organization and the SUBVETS WWII have come closer together.
In review, it’s been a busy year. We’ve done a lot to improve Groton Base and to help out the local community. We’ve accomplished a lot and can hold our heads high as members of SUBVETS Groton Base. 2002 promises to be another busy year for the "First and Finest Base" of USSVI. Our biggest events will be our Memorial Services and the SUBVETS 38th Anniversary Celebration, which you will read more about in this newsletter.
Our image continues to improve and we will be come more popular. Our Memorial Services will continue to grow and our membership will continue to grow.
My thanks to all the members of Groton Base for making us the best at what we do. It’d be very hard for anyone to convince me that there’s any other base better than GROTON BASE in USSVI.

OUTSTANDING JOB ON MEMBERSHIP. WELL DONE TO ALL!!!
IT’S TIME TO RENEW FOR 2002.
KEEP BRINGING IN THOSE NEW MEMBERS
|
|
||||
RENEWAL NOTES:
*The cost to renew dues for Regular or Associate Members is only $20.00 if you renew by 31 Mar 2002, and $30.00 if you renew after March 31, 2002. LIFE MEMBERS are still required to pay $10.00 for Base Dues.
*Members who renew by 1 January will be eligible for the base's Early Bird Raffle, where 5 different prizes ranging from Membership dues for the next year to free lunches, hats and shirts are given out.
*If your mailing address should change, please let us know about it as soon as possible. THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS CANNOT BE OVEREMPHASIZED. It’s very costly for us and National when addresses are incorrect to get our newsletters and American Submariners delivered. Boat Notes and the American Submariner are sent via Bulk Mail. This is at a reduced rate. Bulk Rate Mail is not forwarded to any new addresses. Instead it is returned at the regular cost of mailing. Then to get it to you the full cost of mailing again has to be applied. The last newsletter we mailed we had +40 newsletters returned for invalid addresses. Because of the significant cost involved, National no longer requests address corrections from the American Submariner. Instead, they leave the sole responsibility for correct addresses with the bases AND THE MEMBERS.
GROTON BASE Early Bird Winners
Note: Please contact the Base Commander for your prizes.
Note: The following membership information is as of 26 January 2002.

"There is a port of no return, where ships may ride at anchor for a little space.
And then some starless night the cable slips leaving an eddy at the mooring place…
Gulls vear no longer, Sailor rest your oars. No tangled wreckage shall be washed ashore"
Leslie Nelson Jennings Lost Harbor
Shipmate Petronzio rest your oars!
